The island has approximately 1,500 permanent inhabitants, primarily members of the Shirazi Tribe, most of whom are Muslims and sustain themselves through fishing and agriculture.Funzi Island is known for its pristine beaches and is Kenya's best nesting site for various sea turtles, such as the green turtle (Chelonia mydas), hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata), and leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea), which are classified as either endangered or critically endangered.
