About Kaya Kinondo

Kaya Kinondo Sacred Forest is not just a forest; it's a sacred site with profound cultural and historical significance. Once the home of the Digo people, a sub-tribe of the Mijikenda, this site is a testament to their rich heritage. The term "Kaya" means home or village, reflecting the fortified settlements established by the locals over 600 years ago.

Historically, Kaya Kinondo served as a sanctuary where the Digo people communicated with their ancestors through prayers and offerings. It was also a refuge from enemies during migrations. Today, the forest remains a deeply spiritual place, where the natural and cultural heritage is protected by local beliefs and traditions.

Visitors to Kaya Kinondo can experience the unique coastal culture through a guided walk in the sacred forest. The forest is home to endangered species of flora and fauna, making it a vital conservation area. Kaya Kinondo is the only sacred forest open to visitors among the nine Mijikenda tribes along the coast. Ceremonies, especially those surrounding the burial site of elders, are still held in the most sacred areas of the Kaya, where the spirits of the ancestors are believed to dwell.

About the Visit

Tours to the Kaya forest are scheduled for the cooler parts of the day, either in the morning or late afternoon, ensuring a comfortable experience. For those seeking adventure, a 10 km bicycle ride from most Diani hotels, including the Diani Forest Lodge, offers an immersive journey to the forest.

The experience begins with a 15-minute briefing at the Visitor Centre, followed by a 50-minute guided forest walk along shaded trails, exploring significant tree species, medicinal plants, and local traditions. After the walk, a short transfer brings guests to the nearby village for 60 minutes of cultural immersion. Guests engage with local life, explore traditional livelihoods, meet the village healer, and enjoy a mandatory Digo traditional dance performance (approx. 15 minutes) as well as a tasting of local African herbal tea made from lemongrass (approx. 15 minutes). Guests may also sample freshly tapped palm wine (mnazi) if they wish.

The experience concludes in the village, where guests depart at their convenience.

Know Before You Go:

  • Transportation is recommended, as the short transfer to the village is difficult on foot.
  • Hotel pick-up and drop-off from Diani hotels may cost around USD 35 (small car) or USD 40 (van).
